Kitchen scale capacity calculator

Choose enough capacity for the container and ingredients without giving up useful precision.

Quick answer: add the empty container and maximum ingredient load, then include headroom for pouring and recipe changes. Most routine cooking does not benefit from buying the highest capacity available.

Capacity and precision solve different problems

Capacity is the heaviest total load a scale can accept. Resolution is the smallest displayed increment. A 5 kg scale with 1 g increments suits common baking and meal prep, while very small quantities may call for a separate finer-resolution scale.

Count the container before tare

Tare resets the display, but the bowl's weight still counts against the scale's maximum. A heavy mixing bowl plus a large batch can exceed capacity even when the displayed ingredient weight appears lower.

Make sure the display stays visible

A wide bowl can cover controls or the readout. Compare the platform depth and display position with the containers you use most. Physical buttons can be easier to operate with wet or flour-covered hands.

Common questions

Does tare remove the bowl from capacity?

No. Tare changes the displayed value, but the bowl still contributes to the physical load on the scale.

Is a higher-capacity scale always better?

No. Capacity, low-end accuracy, response time, and displayed increments are separate specifications.
